MY REVIEW:
Callie is running for her life after witnessing a murder and it happens she can't go any further than small town Montana before succumbing to her injuries, where Jake finds her and whisks her off for life saving treatment. She is to be under his watch until she heals, by doctor's order. She just wants to keep running. They are attracted to each other, but both have some issues to work through in order to trust one another. Jake needs Callie to confide the truth to him, and when she does it is bigger than he realizes. Can he keep her safe and bring down the bad guy? Will they have a chance to grow a relationship?
This was a quick read. The story was good, if you believe in love at first sight. The plot was well thought out. It ran the expected course. There weren't many surprises, but it was still entertaining and sweet. One of my favorite characters was actually, Bruiser - the dog. He was brave and loyal.

Marie Reviews "Dreamer" by Jane Susann Maccarter
Dreamer by Jane Susann MacCarter
BOOK DESCRIPTION ON AMAZON:
When homely college student Stella Denton and nerdy professor Harry Vale find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time during a convenience store hold-up, the result turns deadly. A ricocheted bullet enters Stella’s brain, causing her to sink into a coma.
But Stella is actually more ‘alive’ than doctors realize. Though outwardly unresponsive, she’s actually ‘awakening’ in Jarmo, an Eden-like paradise that actually existed 9000 years ago.
In this alternate world, the New Stella is beautiful and desirable, while the hunky chief of the tribe turns out to be a notched-up version of her Anthro professor, Harry Vale. Stella flourishes in Jarmo, where Harry teaches her the finer points of sex, romance, and passion.
But is Jarmo and all its delights truly an alternative reality? Or is it just a dream, and Stella the Dreamer? Is her beloved Jarmo (as well as New Harry) nonexistent, just a figment of her severely injured brain? When Stella emerges suddenly from the coma, she must make an irrevocable choice between two lives… one of which may not really exist—and the choosing of which might lead to her obliteration.
An 18+ young adult contemporary romance, DREAMER explores the nature of Reality and Love, showing us that neither are absolutes. And that Reality is what you make it—as is Love.
MY REVIEW:
I was intrigued by the description of this book and when I began reading it I was drawn in immediately. The book starts quickly with Stella and her professor being wounded in a bungled convenience store robbery - Stella getting a bullet lodged in her brain and falling into a coma. Her professor has a bullet in his leg, and is hospitalized also. When he realizes Stella has no real family to be with her and care for her, he steps in to fill the void becoming very attached and devoted to her. He is hoping for a real relationship, equivalent to the one he has invented to placate the hospital staff and her step father, once she awakens. Its action packed and exciting plot got and kept kept my attention. It is a complex and captivating tale of the boring hum drum life in a less than average body, being someone completely forgettable that Stella faces in her real life versus her new life where she has inhabited a beautiful perfect body and has become wife of the gorgeous chief man in Jarmo - a paradise of thousands of years ago. Is she really in Jarmo or is it just a dream? She doesn't want to ever leave her fantasy - if it is indeed one - but she may have no choice. Poor Professor Harry may not get the bride he was hoping for either. Does he help her try to find her way back to Jarmo or does he put his own desires selfishly ahead of Stella's?
The down side of the book was that it didn't really end and left me wanting more - some conclusion to Stella's journey. I look forward to future tales by this author.
I was given a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
It is a $0.99 purchase on Kindle. Definitely worth it.

Marie Reviews Keep No Secrets by Julie Compton
Keep No Secrets by Julie Compton
BOOK DESCRIPTION ON AMAZON:
After the ultimate betrayal, which is more important: trust or forgiveness?
In KEEP NO SECRETS, the controversial follow-up to Compton's debut legal thriller TELL NO LIES, a district attorney struggles to redeem himself after a one-night stand damaged his marriage and professional reputation.
After surviving the private and public fallout from a one-night stand four years before, St. Louis DA Jack Hilliard wants nothing more than to be trusted again by his wife, Claire, and to earn back the respect of the community he serves. Since the day Claire accepted him back into the family, he's vowed to be true to these goals, and so far he's succeeded.
But all of Jack's efforts begin to crumble when the woman involved in his earlier downfall, Jenny Dodson, returns to town claiming threats on her life and asking for his help, and resurrecting for Jack long-buried emotions and questions of her guilt for the murder of a client. Just when he thinks the pressure can't get any worse, his son's girlfriend, Celeste, accuses him of sexual assault, and he suddenly finds himself on the wrong end of a criminal case, battling for his freedom.
Can Jack trust his freedom to the legal system on which he built his career? Or will the ghost of his one-night stand four years before come back to haunt him, causing him to be convicted on the mistakes of his past?
MY REVIEW:
Lies of Omission Are What Keep This Story Going
I want to start off by saying that I did not read the book before this one. This book did give enough information so that I could understand the story and it read well on its own. I was so involved in it, I didn't want to put it down. It is obvious the author has a deep knowledge of the legal system. I was engrossed with the story. There are many layers to the book: the marital relationship, the parent/child relationships, and the relationship Jack wants - but doesn't have - with Jenny. Jack made a mistake in the first book and cheated on his wife with Jenny, who was involved in the murder case of her father's mistress. This mistress was believed to be the reason Jenny's mother, father, and little sister were executed. Another man went to jail and Jenny walked away free. Jack is never sure if her feelings for him were real or if she used their one night together as an alibi for the crime. In this book, Jenny comes back, but Jack fights his impulses and his desires. Jenny says she needs his help because someone has been sending her threatening letters that look like they refer to the murder of her family. He doesn't know if he can trust her, but he agrees to help her anyway because he wants to know the truth about her once and for all.
His son, Michael, makes poor choices with his girlfriend, and in Jack's eagerness to repair some of the damage he caused their father/son relationship when he had the affair, he covers for Michael with Claire. This eventually bites Jack in the backside when Michael's girlfriend accuses him of sexual assault in a case where it is her word against his.
The way I read it, this story was of redemption. Jack tries to do the right thing for his marriage and his family while battling for his legal life against charges made by his son's girlfriend that he sexually assaulted her. Since being tried by the press previously for his adultery, it makes it an even bigger deal to be accused of assault by someone who looks so much like the woman he cheated with. Can he stay within the law, tell Claire no lies, and keep himself out of Jenny's bed while he proves his innocence and regains his son's respect?
I was hoping for a happy ending...but happy depends on your point of view. I'll let you form your own opinion.

Marie Reviews One Step Too Far by Tina Seskis
One Step Too Far by Tina Seskis
BOOK DESCRIPTION ON AMAZON:
An apparently happy marriage. A beautiful son. A lovely home. So what makes Emily Coleman get up one morning and walk right out of her life – changing her name, holing up in a grotty house in North London, taking a dead-end job where she won’t be found. Has she had a breakdown? Was it to escape her dysfunctional family, especially her malevolent twin Caroline who always seemed to hate her? And what is the anniversary that looms, threatening to force her to confront her past? No-one has ever guessed her secret. Will you?
MY REVIEW:
This book starts out in one voice, and switches point of view frequently. It also switches to a narrator point of view at intervals. It can all be very distracting if you are not paying close attention. If you don't want to be confused, keep your mind on the story.
It was an interesting tale of how Emily finally snapped after spending her entire life dealing with her not no sane family. She runs away and tries to start a new life, leaving me trying to figure out what happened that was so bad it would force her to such extremes and such a drastic change in life style. It was not revealed until the very end, extremely suspenseful. I was very surprised with the final telling of the tale.
I feel like some of the book was unnecessary, could have been cut out and it wouldn't have made the story less interesting, maybe it would have even made it less confusing. I also questioned how her husband couldn't find her for a whole year. She was using her real name.
Over all, I enjoyed it, and was kept on edge waiting to finally figure out what that turning point was that changed Emily Coleman to Cat Brown.
